Scientific publications are considered an indicator of a country’s development. Based on data released by Scopus, an institution providing journal and citation databases on an international scale, Indonesia is ranked 39th for the number of scientific publications worldwide. Although Indonesia is ranked 9th at the Asian level, which is considered relatively good, Zuhud Rozaki, Ph.D., a lecturer at the Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) and a national journal accreditation assessor, believes that Indonesia is still experiencing a trend of the scientific publications escalation compared to other Southeast Asian countries.

It was conveyed by Zuhud in the agenda of the workshop entitled “Quality of Abdimas Articles: Processing Scientific Articles to Research Journal Standards” on Saturday (16/12). This workshop aims to improve the quality of Jurnal Berdikari, one of the journals owned by UMY and focuses on the scope of community service.

Zuhud, who was a speaker at the workshop, explained several aspects that determine the quality of a scientific article published in a journal. Various institutions providing journal and citation databases, such as SINTA and Scopus, have different standards, as each institution has different article acceptance criteria. He stated that journals discussing community service have research models that must be adhered to.

“The components that must be included in the research model of scientific articles originating from community service have to employ a research approach. This approach can be carried out in two categories, namely research articles and case-based articles. If you use research articles, the service activities carried out are to produce research-based scientific articles. Meanwhile, case-based articles are applied to service activities that are considered unsuitable for conducting research,” explained Zuhud.

SINTA-indexed journals, such as Berdikari, which covers national scale indexation, must meet several criteria to meet good publication standards. According to Zuhud, there are two key points in a scientific publication, namely, substance and management. He also emphasized the importance of the substance of a scientific publication that offers novelty to its readers.

“Several aspects of substance are difficult to fulfill in scientific publications originating from community service, such as novelty and contribution to science when they have to be processed to match the quality of research-based scientific publications. It is also what makes several community service journals experience a little difficulty in achieving better indexation,” he said.

Head of the UMY Community Service Institute (LPM), Dr. Ir. Gatot Supangkat, M.P., IPM. stated that the Berdikari Journal is a forum for disseminating the results of community service activity to reach a wider community since it is the only journal at UMY using community service as the basis for its research.

“Currently, the Berdikari Journal has been indexed in SINTA and is in category 4. When we have evaluated to propose to a higher category, we have to adjust the journal to the applicable standards. This workshop was held to make improvements, especially in terms of articles in scientific publications, as we believe that there must be sustainable development, especially in the field of research,” he said.

Gatot also hopes that the quality of the Berdikari Journal can experience a significant increase to achieve the target of higher indexation at the international level. (ID)
